Integrated Recreational Framework

The Integrated Recreation Framework (IRF) completed with NewUrban Architects comprises a network of open spaces located in Cape Town’s second Metropolitan Node, stretching from Jack Muller Park in the north, to Elizabeth Park in the south via the Elsieskraal River Corridor, and stretching west along Voortrekker Road to the Bellville Sports Complex and Haardekraaltjie Camp Site. The vision for the site is to create a linked system of spaces that will provide recreational opportunities through a series of key upgrade, revitalization and rehabilitation projects.

The IRF framework details a framework to integrate, connect and activate all open spaces. The framework identifies and focuses appropriate attention on opportunities for urban improvement which directly relate to improvements to the public realm to encourage people to enjoy both urban areas and nature and to engage in forms of passive and active recreation. The framework aims to:

  1. Reinforce Voortrekker Road as a Vibrant Activity Street.

  2. Cluster sports and community facilities into the Bellville sports precinct

  3. Redevelop the Hardekraaltjie camp ground and better connect this development into the Bellville Sports Precinct.

  4. Recognise development opportunities on underutilised land parcels.

  5. Link fragmented public open space and create areas for passive and active recreation along the Elsieskraal River Corridor

  6. Improve pedestrian linkages, environment and access throughout
