King Langalibalele Drive Upgrade

King Langalibalele Drive is the spine of Langa, one of Cape Town's oldest and most culturally significant townships. Commissioned by the City of Cape Town's Urban Design Branch as part of the broader Langa Living Streets initiative, Yes& Studio was appointed to develop a concept design for the upgrade of this key public corridor.

The street connects a rich sequence of community assets including the Guga S'Thebe arts centre, the Old Pass Office Heritage Museum, the Langa Clinic, the public library, and two schools whose boundaries define a substantial portion of the route. The brief called for a design that could hold all of this together, addressing safety, comfort, identity, and movement within a single coherent vision.

The project began with a detailed contextual analysis that examined the street's character areas, movement patterns, edge conditions, trade activity, and public realm quality. This analysis, alongside a review of the relevant spatial development frameworks, established the foundation for seven design principles: a street that is safe, multimodal, green, inclusive, comfortable, robust, and rooted in the cultural narrative of Langa.

Community engagement was central to the process. Two community workshops, dedicated engagements with Langa High School and Siyabulela Primary School, and a Public Open House brought residents, educators, learners, and local stakeholders directly into the design process. Their knowledge of how the street functions at differnt times of the day, what feels comfortable, and what the community values shaped the proposals at every stage.

Three concept scenarios were developed at minimum, medium, and maximum levels of intervention, and tested against technical and budgetary constraints. Inputs from enginnering and other City departments were also incorporated into the design. The preferred concept draws from the most ambitious scenario: a street with traffic calming along its full length, protected bicycle lanes, a continuous tree canopy, new public squares, and a school zone designed around the safety and everyday needs of children, caregivers and residents.
